A small-time thief named Darien Fawkes is sent to prison on a third strike rap. His brother, Kevin Fawkes, offers him a way out. Darien accepts, little suspecting that his brother is planning to use him as a human labrat.
A bio-synthetic invisibility gland is surgically implanted into his cerebral cortex. The gland secretes a substance called 'Quicksilver', which can bend light, thus rendering him invisible. However, the gland acts like a narcotic, messing with the epinephrine and nor-epinephrine in Darien's system, which will break down his inhibitions and eventually drive him insane. The only thing that keeps him from this 'Quicksilver Madness' is a drug called 'the counteragent'.
His brother is killed and he is hired by the Agency, a shady government organization that is funded by the Department of Fish and Game. He does jobs for them (catching terrorists and criminals, that sort of thing) and in return he is supplied with the counteragent.
